Rubbing Full-scale

Graphic paper, graphite

During the initial tracing experimentation, I engaged in the process of frottage by rubbing my studio stool from the previous semester.

After placing graphic paper against the surface of the stool, charcoal is applied to create the impressions. This intrigued me due to the inherent imperfections that emerged during the measurement process. Instead of relying on conventional measuring devices, every cut, fold, and measurement was recorded through the charcoal traces on the paper.

Another captivating aspect of this process was the transformation of these rubbing pieces. As unfolding, a tapestry of imprints was revealed, capturing the character of the stool in intricate detail. Inspired by these rubbings, a full-scale drawing is made to expand upon the stool's original three-dimensional form. This transition from a physical object to a two-dimensional representation delves into the concept of dimensionality within tracing.
