Mnemonic Frottage

After several frottage tests, I was looking for a site that could give me the energy and inspiration to rub the entire spatial condition. At that point, I went through the loss of a loved one and had a chance to travel back to my hometown in Nanjing, China. My grandpa’s house is one of my favourite places in the world, so I decided to rub my grandpa’s foyer. Every time I see this foyer it is about leaving, but this time I can preserve it permanently. The process functions more like a therapy for me, to deal with all the grief, regret and loss.

After I finished the whole rubbing and put them all into scroll holders, I travelled back to Providence with them. I do have the feeling that I’m carrying my anchor in the world with me to another side of the earth. After unfolding them and assembling them into a full scale drawing, I finally understand what Robin Evans means by drawing is the container of signs of life.
